Volunteer opportunities exist throughout the year.

In-Class: We often need assistance with in-person children’s classes. Our teachers will reach out to past graduates for assistance with lower-level classes when needed. If you are a past graduate and wish to volunteer, please email the school at ngakko@telus.net.

Board of Directors: Board positions are open to all parents of past and present students in our children’s classes, past and present adult students, and members of the community. Use your skills and passion for Japanese language and culture to ensure the continuity of our school.  Work with community partners, school staff and fellow board members to ensure our school continues to thrive and meet its mission well into the future. Email the school at ngakko@telus.net.

Committees: Ad hoc and standing committees are formed during the school year. Let us know if you are interested in sitting on a committee and we can have a conversation about open positions. Email ngakko@telus.net.

Steveston Salmon Festival: The school and other Steveston Japanese community groups work together to host the Chow Mein booth at this annual Canada Day celebration.  You can volunteer to chop vegetables in preparation or be a cook or server on the day of the event. Calls for volunteers are sent out in May.

Richmond Cherry Blossom Festival: The cherry blossom festival (sakura matsuri) is a community celebration showcasing the beauty of the 255 Akebono cherry trees at Garry Point Park and Richmond’s Japanese culture. Demonstrations, displays, performances, food, and music are offered at this family-friendly event held in early April. Depending on the year’s format, the school may need a volunteer coordinator, kimono models, craft table leaders, and other assistance. Please let us know if you would like to volunteer at this event with the school. Email ngakko@telus.net.
